Surely, you’ve noticed how some Donald Trump supporters invent explanations and concoct justifications for his wackiest, most illegal, and meanest behaviors and actions.
But did you ever find yourself feeling a need, out of a sense of loyalty, to justify something Joe Biden did when a lot of people around you were wondering aloud whether it was a sign of dementia?
That’s hero worship: harboring such admiration for the idealized version of a leader that you presume that the leader must be right, even infallible, and so you abandon your own good sense in favor of those presumptions.
"Oh, it's beautiful! It's enchanting," one of the emperor’s ministers said of the emperor’s imaginary new raiment, peering through his spectacles as the emperor paraded naked down the avenue before the public.
Said another, "Such a pattern, what colors!"
"But he hasn't got anything on," a little child said.
And one person whispered to another what the child had said, "He hasn't anything on. A child says he hasn't anything on."
"But he hasn't got anything on!" the whole town cried out at last.
I will suggest examples for subscribers who might want to dig deeper into recent examples of just such delusions.
